Best Bras for Post Mastectomy
At Understance, we’re dedicated to creating bras for everybody and every body at every life stage, including individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. In this blog post, we’re rounding up our best post mastectomy bras.
If you’ve had a mastectomy, your bra needs will have changed, depending on the diagnosis.
Post-Op Recovery
For the days following your surgery, we recommend our Post-Op Bra. It’s designed specifically for post double mastectomy recovery.
The bra is flat in the cups, seamless on the inside, has a longline design that reduces pressure on the ribcage, and compresses like a medium-impact sports bra.
During this time, moving your arms (let alone clasping a bra from the back) can be very difficult, so this mastectomy bra easily closes from the front with magnets. (Don’t use this bra if you have a pacemaker.)

The bra also has velcro shoulder straps that are easy to adjust from the front.

The velcro tabs along the band keep drains in place. If you need holes for drain tubes, you can cut a small hole on the side and the fabric won’t unravel.

What is a mastectomy?
A mastectomy is a surgical procedure where an entire breast is removed, either to treat breast cancer or prevent the disease in individuals who are at high-risk.
Whereas a lumpectomy removes only a portion of the breast, where the tumor is.
There are many different types of mastectomies depending on the diagnosis, but the two basic types are:
A double mastectomy is when both breasts are removed, and the bust becomes flat.

A unilateral mastectomy is when only one breast is removed, and the bust becomes asymmetrical.
